Print!

I chose to do print as one of my three electives. I have previously tried out wood cut and dry point print as part of my portfolio preparation course and really enjoyed it.We were given a brief with a project asking us to "Define our space". I started by taking pictures of my immediate environment, my home. We recently redecorated our sitting room so it was a good example of how people change and alter their space. I focused on the fire place.
I was eager to get started so I did a few sketches of my fireplace and one in positive and negative to make it easier to work out when it comes to printing.
I then drew it up in a 10X10cm square so as to fit in 3 rows of 3 on my 30X30cm aceate to create a pattern design. I desided to start with a dry point print so I etched the fire place into my aceate using a compass.
At first I found the dry point process long but I eventually started to get quicker at it bt was tired of printing the same monotonus prints. So, after each print I etched in a design into one of the fire places so each one became a little different than the other.
One of my first prints

One of my last prints.

I experimented by monoprinting colour onto some of my dry point prints to see how they would turn out..

.....

I decided to use these 18 prints to arrange a simple fire place the same as the one I had drawn and to have some thing burning inside. One thing I want to get rid of in life is cancer and it has also recently altered my family environment... So I looked up pictures of lung cancer cells, turns out they are pretty to look at.

I thought the use of mono print would be the best way to depict these cells. I started by printing off about 12 sheets of cream which would be the cells background. I then inked up my acetate in purple ink and rubbed off and dabbed off the ink with white spirits and printed off what was left behind onto the cream sheet.

I like the way it appears that the cells are moving around within the print so I printed more in orange and red to make them look like they are burning.

Ok, now iv got my dry point prints of my fire place done and something to burn in it, all I need to do is to arrange them into a fire place!
